Trial Summary
The overall conclusions of this trial were that the supplementation of high numbers of probiotic bacteria to people diagnosed with IBS:
- Proved effective in significantly reducing total symptom levels of IBS.
- Proved effective in improving quality of life in people with IBS.
- That continuous supplementation was necessary to sustain the effect.
As such the supplementation of probiotics to people with diagnosed IBS may offer an effective alternative, or addition to current types of therapy. Furthermore probiotics may offer an effective remedy to the large population of people who experience IBS like symptoms, but who are not formally diagnosed with the disease.
